HI! I’M SERENA MCCORMICK
I am a homeschooling mom of three kids and practicing Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I was homeschooled as a child during early elementary school years, and later attended a private school, public school, college and graduate school. I see the value in each avenue of learning as a student. Homeschooling my own children felt like a natural and familiar avenue for our family. For the most part it was fun and easy. But when we got to the more challenging subjects like reading/writing/math with my first homeschooled child, I quickly ran into resistance, complaining, tears, and meltdowns. I wanted her to have a love for learning, feel confident in her abilities, and be okay with imperfection and not always knowing the answers. However, saying those things and encouraging her to keep trying wasn’t helping.
In those moments of refusal, I found myself feeling anxious, discouraged and struggling to find a way to get her to believe in herself and engage with schoolwork. Then it dawned on me – I was dealing with a normal emotional reaction to having to do something that’s hard, new, unknown, uninteresting, and produces the feeling of “I can’t”. I put my Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology and experience as a therapist to use in those exact moments of refusal.
And you know what? I was able to help her get unstuck and back to wrapping up those lessons and assignments so we could move on with our lives. I decided to neatly package up the knowledge and tools that I have implemented with my own children and share them with you. Now you and your child can get over the frustration and fatigue of schoolwork and get back to playing, visiting friends, crafting, baking… and enjoying life!
